Split/Second Review

What do you get when you cp,bome races with explosions and have the races presented like a game show? One game that comes to mind is Split/Second. There are many racing games but is that all that separates Split/Second from other racing games?

Split/Second is a racing game where you race against other racers but these aren’t normal vehicle races. You can fill up a meter below your hud by drifting or following behind other racers. Once you fill this meter, you can set off explosions and hazards to take out the racers in front of you but you could also take yourself out. Some courses also have shortcuts that can be activated and the course could change so every race is unpredictable. There are more modes in this game other than normal races.

There is a mode called detonator where you must complete a lap on a specific track by yourself. Hazards and explosions will be set off automatically and the idea of the mode is to finish a lap as soon as you can while dealing with hazards that could take you out and impede your progress.

There are eliminator races where there are eight racers and the race starts like normal. After 60 seconds, whoever is last is eliminated from the race. After the first elimination, eliminations happen every 20 seconds until there is one racer left in the race.

Air Strike is where you are racing but you have to dodge missiles from a helicopter. You try to survive as long as you can without crashing or getting blown up. The mode is over when you fail three times. There is also a mode called Air Revenge where the more you avoid missiles, you can shoot back at the helicopter and the idea of Air Revenge is to take out the helicopter as fast as possible.

Another mode is Survival where semi trucks are dropping explosive barrels out the back and you have to pass as many trucks as you can. An arcade timer counts down and you get more time for every truck you pass but when that timer runs out, you enter Sudden Death where the next time you get blown up, the mode ends.

The gameplay is easy for the most part. The events will get harder as you go through the season mode and you can expect to crash a lot if you haven’t played the game before. However, the game i not hard to learn how to play and can be a lot of fun once you start playing.

I have no problems with the controls. They work very well and there is nothing I would change about the controls.

The story of the game presents this game’s season as a television show. As you go through the 12 episodes, you unlock races, cars, and tracks and you try to score first in the events so you unlock the elite race at the end of each episode. Once you complete an episode, you get a trailer of what the next episode will include featuring events that you haven’t participated in yet.

When it comes to stages, you do see the same nine as you play these different modes. However, some tracks have alternate routes and none of these tracks feel like they overstay their welcome. Other than that, the graphics are average for the Xbox 360.

I have no problem with the sounds. The announcer when he announces an episode gets you hyped to see what the next episode will feature., The explosions and crashes sound satisfying so there is nothing I would change about the sound.

There is a lot of replayability in the game. The season has 12 episodes and every episode has six events including an elite race. After the season mode, you can play this game with friends online and you can also have multiple people play off the same console. If you don’t do so well on a season, you can play previous events from episodes in the season mode without having to do the whole episode.

Split/Second is a lot of fun to play and it’s easy enough to play so it won’t turn new players off. I have no problem with the controls. I love how the season mode was presented. I also have no problem with the graphics or sound. There is also a lot of replayability in the game. So I give Split/Second on the Xbox 360 10 out of 10. I can’t think of anything that would make this game better. Unfortunately, the game did not sell well but you can find the game for cheap whether you get it for XBox 360, PlayStation 3, or PSP. I recommend if you have one of those consoles, to get a copy of this game and I think you would enjoy it.
