Does anyone remember when the Splatterhouse reboot came out in 2010? There was a lot of hype before the release and when the game came out, no one can say it failed due to lack of promotion. The same can’t be said for Marlow Briggs and The Mask Of Death. Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death came out three days after Grand Theft Auto V and I never even heard of this game until it was offered as part of Games With Gold. Was Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death a good game that happened to fly under many people’s radar?
There is a part where you can use a turret to take down a helicopter but for most of the game, you will be hacking and slashing enemies with the same weapon that was used to kill Marlow at the beginning of the game. Marlow has an ability where if he grabs an enemy, he can possess them to fight on Marlow’s behalf.
The game is pretty easy when it comes to difficulty. There were no parts of the game that took numerous tries to get passed but I didn’t complete the game without dying. So the difficulty of the game was fair.
There are no problems with the controls. The controls were always responsive and never posed any problems. So there is nothing I would change about the controls.
The story of the game starts with Marlow’s girlfriend wanting to leave her job but she is worried about telling her boss without Marlow there for support. When she tells her boss she wants to leave Marlow steps up to her boss who tries to intimidate her from leaving, Marlow is killed while his girlfriend is forced to watch and then the boss of Marlow’s girlfriend if she still plans to leave, he will go after her loved ones and he can reach them even if they’re far away.
Marlow’s body is dead until the mask of death attaches himself and brings him back to life. The mask of death also tells Marlow to pick up the weapon he was killed with and stop the boss of his girlfriend.
One thing I hate about the cutscenes is they look like they were recorded with a nanny cam. You hear what is going on but you are looking at still images instead of a scene playing out in front of you. If the beginning of the game could have a cutscene play out, why are other scenes playing out with still images displayed.
The graphics are not that good. The game came out three days after Grand Theft Auto V but the graphics are nowhere near as good as Grand Theft Auto V. On top of that, the game always takes place in an environment that looks like a factory or jungle so the backgrounds look the same after a while.
I have no problems with the sound. I like the music and the sound effects. If you played Splatterhouse then you’ll realize the mask of death has a similar personality to the terror mask in Splatterhouse which I enjoyed.
The game is fun to complete but after you complete it the first time, there is no reason to go back and play the game again.
So the gameplay is fun and easy and I have no problem with the controls. The story makes sense and is interesting from the beginning. The graphics aren’t that great although I enjoyed the sound but there isn’t much replayability. So I give Marlow Brriggs and the Mask Of Death 7 out of 10. This game was only released digitally and it might be hard to find but if you can, it’s worth playing through once.
