Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon Review

When it comes to shooters, it doesn’t take long for the game to get boring if there isn’t something like a good story or new gameplay mechanics that makes you want to continue the game. Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon is one game that does not offer anything interesting to make the campaign worth playing.

The gameplay involves you and a couple of allies shooting giant insects while trying to get from point A to point B. Then you will be given another destination and you have to get there while eliminating all enemies. The gameplay is shoot, get to the next location then shoot then get to the next location until you finish the level. There are a couple of extra modes like a survival mode where you fight waves of enemies. You can also play the campaign a second time where different enemies replace other enemies.

The gameplay is easy. You just kill enemies and if you get killed, your partners can revive you. Even if you are playing with allies controlled by the computer, they get to you and revive you. One drawback is some enemies that are flying can drop more enemies like airships and those enemy generators take a long amount of time to kill.

I have no problem with the controls. Whether it’s shooting switching out weapons or moving, there are no controls that are complicated and I would not change any of the controls in this game.

The story is giant bugs are terrorizing the city and you have to kill them. That is the entire story. The only time you get orders is to go to a different location. Nothing is explaining where these bugs came from and nothing is showing that the story is progressing. You go somewhere, eliminate enemies then rinse and repeat.

I have no problems with the graphics. The graphics aren’t breathtaking but they are average for the Xbox 360. So the graphics are average. The sound is the same. While nothing made me want to play the game on mute, there is nothing I would praise about the sound. I like the music and the voice of the person giving you objectives.

There are a couple of gameplay modes that extend the gameplay if you want to continue after finishing the campaign. The placement of enemies can be switched and there is a survival mode.

The gameplay is fun at first but it gets old very quickly. The game is mostly easy except for the flying enemy generators. I have no problem with the controls. There is no story explained at the beginning of the game or even as you progress through the game. The graphics and sound are average at best and there is replayability. So I give Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon on the Xbox 360 a 5 out of 10. Nothing changes the fact that this game is boring and there are many other shooters you can play which will keep your attention. So I recommend that if you like shooters, you just pass on this game.
