Final Fight Review

One of my favorite series growing up was the Final Fight series. As this franchise made it to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, the series lost what made it so great in the beginning. To see what made this game so great in the beginning, we have to go back to when Final Fight came out on the Super Nintendo. This was originally going to be a sequel to Street Fighter called Street Fighter ’89 but plans were changed after the success of Double Dragon. What was the first Final Fight like on Super Nintendo?

Final Fight is a side-scrolling beat ’em up. You go from the left side of the board to the right side and you defeat every enemy in your way. Every level consists of a few areas with a boss at the end of the final area You can punch, kick, and throw these enemies but there are also weapons you can pick up like pipes and knives. There were female enemies but the game would not have gotten released in its original form so female enemies were replaced with male enemies.

While there are only six levels in the game, this game is not easy to complete. You can find food to restore your health and items that do nothing except give you points. You can only get one extra life in the game but if you know a code to access the secret options menu, you can get more extra lives and start with more lives. Cody and Haggar both have special moves in case they are getting hit from both sides at once but the special move to get you out of that situation will take a little health away.

If you lose all your lives and have to use a continue, you will start at the beginning of the level you died on. It doesn’t matter if you lose your last life to the boss. If you have to use a continue, you start at the level you died on all over again.

There are a couple of bonus levels you can reach where you can earn extra points which will help you get extra lives depending on the extra life target scores set in the option menu. After level 2, you are in front of a car belonging to a member of Mad Gear with a pipe and you have 30 seconds to destroy the car. After level 4, you have to smash a bunch of windows and get to the end of the level before the timer runs out.

I have no problems with the controls of this game. It’s easy to beat up enemies, pull off your special move, and access the secret options menu if you know the code. So there is nothing I would change about the controls.

The story of the game is that Mike Haggar has become the mayor of Metro City and Haggar wants to clean up the crime. Mad Gear wants to make Haggar think twice before doing that and they kidnap his daughter to make sure Haggar gives in to their demands. Instead, Haggar tells Cody who was dating Haggar’s daughter and now one of them is going to take on all of Mad Gear to get Cody’s girlfriend and Haggar’s daughter back.

This game looks great on the Super Nintendo. All six levels look completely different and the enemies you beat up look different enough that you can tell the difference between them. I don’t think it was possible to have better graphics on the Super Nintendo.

There are no voices but the music and sound effects are awesome. I like the sound of Thrasher laughing when he faces you at the end of the first level. I have no problems with the sound in the game so there is nothing I would change about the sound.

There is replayability in the game because after you defeat the game with one character, you can use the other character which has a different fighting style.

The gameplay is a lot of fun and the game presents a challenge but it won’t turn gamers off in the beginning. I have no problems with the controls. The story is easy to understand and makes sense. I have no problems with the graphics or sound and there is replayability. So I give Final Fight on the Super Nintendo 7 out of 10. This isn’t expensive for Super Nintendo and it’s a fun game to play.
