Final Fight CD Review

If you like beat ’em ups on the Super Nintendo then you have probably played Final Fight. While it was a good game on Super Nintendo, it was re-released on Sega CD named Final Fight CD. Was this a good remake and a reason to buy the Sega CD? Or was this just one of the games that gave the Sega CD its reputation?

In Final Fight on Super Nintendo, you could only choose between Cody & Haggar. On Sega CD, you could pick between Cody, Haggar & Guy. You could also have two players play simultaneously and work together. The female enemies that were replaced in the Nintendo version appeared as they originally did in this version. There is also a Time Attack mode where you pick one of the three selectable characters from the single-player mode and defeat as many enemies as you can.

When two players play together, you could end up hitting each other. Also, more enemies will appear in a two-player game. If you want to alter the options so you can start with a higher number of lives or increase the number of extra lives you can get depending on your points, you can set that here and you won’t have to worry about knowing a code to alter these options. If you die in the Super Nintendo version and you have to use a continue, you would start from the beginning of the level where you died In the Sega CD version, you will start exactly where you lost your last life if you use a continue even if you are just playing one player.

I have no problem with the controls. Whether it’s [punching, kicking, throwing enemies, or using weapons, everything is easy to pull off even if you are playing with a standard three-button Sega Genesis controller. So there is nothing I would change about the controls.

The game’s story is that Mike Haggar has become the new mayor and wants to clean up the crime in his city. That is not news Mad Gear was happy about so they kidnap Haggar’s daughter and threaten to harm her if Haggar doesn’t turn a blind eye to their activities like the previous mayor. Haggar tells Cody who is the boyfriend of Haggar’s daughter who happens to be hanging out with Guy. Since Guy is friends with Cody, he looks at Cody’s girlfriend like a friend also and wants to help get Cody’s girlfriend back.

The graphics are very colorful. When you reach the end of a board, you see the character you play as go down the stairs or be carried off by Andore Comparing this to the Super Nintendo version, you would just see your character stand at the end of a board until the new area loads.

While the music is fine, the voices are laughable even by Sega CD standards. Everyone who has lines sounds so uninspired like they couldn’t bother putting any effort into reading their lines. The voices could have been much better.

This game has reliability because you can go through the game alone or with a friend and you can also play the Time Attack mode if you don’t want to play the main game.

The gameplay is fun and it does provide a challenge whether you are playing by yourself or with a friend. There is nothing I would change about the controls. The story makes sense and I like the story. I like the graphics but I think the voices could have been done much better. There is also replayability in this game so I give Final Fight CD on the Sega CD 9 out of 10. Even though I never beat the game, I will still go back and try and it’s one of my favorite beat ’em ups. So if you have a Sega CD, Final Fight CD is one game you should not pass up.
