Tomb Raider III Review

When gamers think of the Tomb Raider series, gamers usually have good opinions about the Tomb Raider games. But no matter how much someone loves the Tomb Raider games, I do not know how someone can have a favorable opinion of Tomb Raider III.

The gameplay is not that fun because it’s unclear what you are supposed to do or where you are supposed to go. You can stand in spikes while not getting hurt and if you try to go in the water, you get swept away by the current. The problem with that is a walkthrough I had to look at shows you are supposed to go in the water to progress but how is that accurate when you lose all control of your character when you go in the water? The first level should not be so difficult to figure out what to do for people who haven’t played this game previously.

The controls are awful. People usually talk about “tank controls” when they talk about the original Resident Evil on the same console. However, I remember Chris and Jill in Resident Evil being a lot easier to go where I wanted them than Lara Croft. When moving the character where you want is a challenge, that’s a problem.

I only know what the story of the game is because I read the story on Wikipedia. The game’s story is that a meteorite has fallen, broken into four pieces and Lara Croft is trying to find all the pieces of the meteorite. The game fails at doing a good job of explaining this story It’s not just the beginning of the story that isn’t explained well. I used a level skip code to advance further and the cutscenes before the levels didn’t do any better job of explaining what was going on.

The nicest thing I can say about the graphics is they are bland. L Going back to Resident Evil: Director’s Cut which came out in 1997, Metal Gear Solid had nicer backgrounds and Metal Gear Solid came out a month earlier than Tomb Raider III. Spyro The Dragon had grassy environments and other vibrant backgrounds and that game came out two months before Tomb Raider III.

There is no music in the game. The sound effects are accurate. The voices are easy to understand but the conversations don’t explain anything so they don’t mean anything.

This game is not fun to play and it’s not easy to figure out where to go. It’s a struggle to control where your character wants to go. The story is not explained well and the cutscenes after the first level don’t explain the story any better than it was explained at the beginning of the game. The graphics are uglier than other games for PlayStation that came out at the same time. The sound effects are accurate but there is no music and the conversations in this game are meaningless so I give Tomb Raider III on the PlayStation 1 out of 10. If you have a PlayStation or PlayStation 2, there are many great games to play but this isn’t one of them.
