Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action RPG that immerses players in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter—set long before the events of the books and films. Rather than playing as a famous character, you create your own witch or wizard, attend Hogwarts as a fifth-year student, and unravel a mystery involving ancient magic that could change the fate of the wizarding world.

Story & Setting
The game takes place in the 1800s, giving the familiar Hogwarts castle and its surroundings a fresh, historically rich feel. You’re not just attending classes—you’re also exploring the Forbidden Forest, visiting Hogsmeade, and battling poachers, dark wizards, and magical beasts. The central plot revolves around your unique ability to wield ancient magic, but the side quests and world-building often shine even brighter than the main storyline.

The writing balances mystery, whimsy, and darker themes well. While some character arcs feel a little predictable, there’s enough intrigue to keep you invested.

Gameplay
The combat system is surprisingly deep. Spell casting feels fluid and satisfying—you’ll swap between attack spells, defensive charms, and environmental interactions with a flick of the wand. Combining magic types to juggle enemies, break shields, and trigger explosive chain reactions never gets old.

Exploration is a highlight. Hogwarts itself is a joy to roam—every hallway, moving staircase, and hidden passage is crammed with secrets. Outside the castle, the open world is filled with caves, ruins, and villages, each with collectibles and challenges. Flying on a broom or hippogriff adds a layer of freedom that makes traversal enjoyable even when you’re not on a quest.

Visuals & Performance
On PS5, Hogwarts Legacy is gorgeous. Hogwarts castle is rendered with jaw-dropping detail, the lighting in the Great Hall feels magical, and the character animations are expressive. The game offers multiple performance modes, with “Performance” keeping things at a smooth 60 FPS while “Fidelity” prioritizes visual splendor. Load times are almost nonexistent thanks to the PS5’s SSD.

That said, you may encounter the occasional pop-in or minor texture loading hiccup—nothing game-breaking, but noticeable during fast travel or high-speed broom flight.

Audio & Atmosphere
The soundtrack is a clear love letter to the Harry Potter films, blending familiar motifs with new compositions that fit the 1800s setting. Sound design is stellar—wand swishes, creaking castle doors, and the ambient chatter of Hogwarts students all work together to make the world feel alive. Voice acting is mostly strong, though a few NPC lines can sound a bit flat or overly repetitive.

Replay Value
There’s plenty to do beyond the main story:
- Side quests and companion storylines
- Beast taming and Vivarium customization
- Potion brewing and herbology
- Collectibles and puzzles like Merlin Trials
- Different houses offer slightly varied experiences
Completing everything can easily push your playtime past 60–80 hours.
Verdict
Hogwarts Legacy delivers the fantasy Harry Potter fans have dreamed about for decades: a chance to live your own adventure in the Wizarding World. It’s not perfect—side missions can feel repetitive, and enemy variety could be broader—but the magic, atmosphere, and attention to detail more than make up for its shortcomings.
If you’ve ever wanted to lose yourself in Hogwarts, this is the closest you’ll get.
