The first time I played a Dragon Ball video game, it didn’t end well. But eventually, I played my second Dragon Ball game, which was Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Now Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is not cheap online, but neither was Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, and I hated that game. But the experience from this game has to be better than Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, right?

There are a bunch of different gameplay modes in this game. Mission 100 gives you certain objectives to do while fighting specific characters. One example of those objectives would be only being allowed to pick two characters when you take on all your opponents.

The next mode is called Sim Dragon. I do not like this mode at all. You pick a fighter, and you can train offensively, defensively, or rest. Everything is just one button, but you choose to train, and then a day goes by, and your fighter has trained. Everything is simulated, but you don’t know if anything worthwhile is happening. I don’t understand what the appeal of this mode is supposed to be.

Disc Fusion is another mode where you can import things from the two previous games in this series. There are different tournaments you can compete it and while the first round was pretty easy, I got my ass handed to me in the econd round. How did the difficulty increase so much in just one round?

The next mode looks like it’s the story mode of the game. The name of the mode is Dragon History, and the first story is the Saiyan Saga. This is where you re-enact previous fights. Before every fight, the story is explained. When you tag out, a cutscene plays before your character tags out. There are a few fights in the Saiyan Saga, and when you win one fight, you unlock the next fight in the story. I made it to the boss battle, but even on easy, I couldn’t defeat the great ape monster.

I have no trouble with the controls. You will be able to punch and kick your opponent across the screen without much practice. There are a couple of special commands, like rotating the analog stick when your opponent is trying to finish you off with their laser attack, or R3 if you want to tag out during a fight. These controls are also simple.

I have nothing bad to say about the graphics. The environments look like they are from the cartoon, and the few characters I am familiar with look like they are supposed to, as far as I can tell. So I have nothing bad to say about the graphics.

I also have nothing bad to say about the sound. The music is appropriate when you are trying to beat up your opponent. I also do not have any problems with any of the voices of the characters. So there is nothing bad about the sound, in my opinion.

I found most of the gameplay modes fun, except for Sim Dragon. The difficulty is a little unfair. I beat the first two levels of the Saiyan Saga on normal, but then I couldn’t beat the boss on Easy. I don’t have any problem with the controls. I like the story mode where you re-enact the big fights that happened from those stories. I have no problems with the graphics or sound. So I give Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on PlayStation 2, 8 out of 10. If you have a PlayStation 2, I recommend you check this game out.
