Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde Review

One of the most hated games on Nintendo is Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Game Informer called Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde unplayable garbage in a retro review. If you are a fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd, you heard everything he had to say about Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. What’s ironic about this game is that when it first came out, the reviews weren’t as bad as they are from people who review it today. Was Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde always this bad or did people learn to hate this game over time?

You start the game off as Dr. Jekyll walks through town. All the people in the tow are hitting you or dropping bombs. A kid runs in to take shots at you with his slingshot. If the meter under your health empties first, you will turn into Mr. Hyde and he will walk the opposite way that Dr. Jekyll was walking.

Not only does Mr. Hyde walk in the opposite direction, but it is night time and you are coming in contact with monsters and brains with legs. As Mr. Hyde, you can shoot your psycho wave to attack these enemies which could refill your meter. If you refill your meter, you turn back into Dr. Jekyll. If you lose all your health in your life meter, you die. If you make it as far as Mr. Hyde, lightning will strike and kill you automatically. Keep in mind you are walking in the opposite direction as Mr. Hyde, so you are going back towards the beginning of the game. So when lightning strikes and kills Mr. Hyde, that means you couldn’t have gone any further back.

The difficulty of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde is unfair. As Dr. Jekyll. you have to deal with people, spiders, a kid with a slingshot, dogs, and birds shitting on you. As you make it further, you will encounter these singling ladies with musical notes flying out of her which hurt you if they make contact with you. So the difficulty is unfair.

I have no problem when it comes to the controls. There aren’t that many commands whether you play as Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde. While this game has many problems, they don’t have anything to do with the controls. So I have no problems with the controls.

The story of the game isn’t explained that well. Dr. Jerkyll is going to the church to get married. The kid who shoots Dr. Jekyll with a slingshot has a crush on Dr. Jekyll’s fiance. Of all this, what does the game tell you? You see Dr. Jekyll leaving his lab. If you beat the game, you see Dr. Jekyll enter a church. That is all you are told in terms of story.

The graphics are not that great. The backgrounds seem to repeat with very little differences now and then. The only big difference is between Dr. Jekyll’s levels and Mr. Hyde’s levels.

The sound in the game is also bad. You have to listen to the same music throughout the game when you play as Dr. Jekyll. If you have the misfortune of turning into Mr. Hyde, then you get different music but these are the only two tracks in the game. The sound effects suck also. So I have nothing nice to say about the sound.

The gameplay is not fun and the difficulty in the game is very unfair. I have no problem with the controls. The story isn’t explained well at all. I have nothing good to say about the graphics or sound. So I give Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on Nintendo 2 out of 10. The only aspect of this game I can praise is the controls. Avoid playing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because this game is not worth your time.
