Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Review

Mortal Kombat was a game that came out in 1992 and games from that franchise are still being released today. However, there were attempts to promote characters by releasing games that would explore the backstory of Mortal Kombat characters The worst game that attempted to explore the backstory of a Mortal Kombat character is Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. If you used AOL during the days of the Nintendo 64 and Playstation, you may remember the ANT team. They reviewed every Nintendo 64 game and PlayStation game and gave Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero 0 out of a possible 100. Is this game worse than Superman on Nintendo 64 and WCW Nitro?

The first level in the game is sidescrolling. You go through the level, defeat monks, drop down to the first floor, and go in the direction you came from until you meet Scorpion who is the boss. The second level has a big emphasis on platforming.

Most of the enemies are very easy to defeat. The same goes for the bosses. With the ability to use herbs to restore health, you will not need more than two attempts to defeat enemies. The hardest part of the first level is the traps that you never see coming. On the second level, there are these bridges that rotate with a spoon and you have to precisely jump on that spoon part which is much harder than it needs to be.

There seemed to be a problem with loading my game. I was able to save it but when I wanted to load up my game, I had to go on the internet to find passwords. I saw Mortal Kombat Mythologies appear on my memory card but I couldn’t figure out how to access my game.

Are the controls as bad as in WCW Nitro on Nintendo 64? Not really. Using the C-buttons to fight is not as difficult as it is in WCW Nitro. You use the B button to change the direction you face and jumping also works. So there is nothing bad that I can say about the controls.

As I stated, this game took place before Sub-Zero was in the Mortal Kombat tournament. He was hired to steal a map which explains the first level. After every level, there are cutscenes to further the story. The cutscenes are pretty good especially when you take the capabilities of the Nintendo 64 into account.

I have no problems with the graphics or sound. Everybody you saw from Mortal Kombat that appears in this game looks like you would expect them to. The music during levels is fine and I don’t have a problem with any of the sound effects.

The gameplay is not that fun and that i because of the difficulty especially in level two with having to jump on a very small platform. I had no problem getting used to the controls. The story didn’t explain anything and it only made sense when I looked it up on Wikipedia. I also have no problem with the graphics or sound so I give Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero on the Nintendo 64 3 out of 10. While this was an interesting concept in theory, it just failed in execution so there is no reason to try out this game.
