Kung-Fu Review

There were a lot of games released for the Nintendo. Some were shovelware while other games are regarded as classics. Kung-Fu Master was released as an arcade game in 1984 and it was ported to the Nintendo In June of 1985, the game was released on the Famicom and then had the title shortened to Kung-Fu in the American and PAL release. What kind of game did the U.S. version of Kung Fu turn out to be?

The game is a side-scrolling game where you have to fight your way from one end of the stage to the other so you can ascend to the next floor. You will have enemies like huggers, knife throwers, midgets, snails, dragons and more trying to kill you before you make it to the end of the stage. If you get past those enemies then you will have to defeat a boos before you can move on to the next stage.

This game can be played with one or two players. In a two-player game, the players take turns trying to get to the next level. There are also two difficulties known as A & B. On difficulty B, the enemies come faster and you have a better chance of having enemies be on both sides at once. You only get one extra life if you reach 50,000 points during the game but that’s all the assistance you get.

The controls work great for the game. A & B punches and kicks while you use left and right on the D-Pad to move. You can press up on the D-pad to jump and you can crouch by holding down on the D-Pad. You can attack enemies while jumping and crouching. There is nothing I would change about the controls.

The story of the game is that your girlfriend named Sylvia has been kidnapped by Mr. X. You control Sylvia’s boyfriend named Thomas who is going to use his kung-fu skills to rescue her from Mr. X. That is all the story given in this game.

The graphics for this game are great. While every floor looks the same, the enemies do look different. All the common enemies can’t be mistaken for one another and then the bosses at the end of the levels also look different. So while this is a Nintendo game, the graphics are great.

I like the music that plays during the game and the sound effects that you hear when you attack. I also like the sound when you reach 50,000 points, which gives you an extra life. So there is nothing I would change about the sound.

There is no way to complete the game. You keep playing this game until you lose your last life and try to get the highest score possible. While this game came out in the mid-80s, this game is still addicting and fun to play today where anybody who plays video games can find enjoyment.

The gameplay is a lot of fun and it starts easy enough that newer gamers won’t be turned off from the challenge. There is nothing I would change about the controls. The story is bare bones which was common for Nintendo games back in the day. While the backgrounds don’t change, all the enemies look different including the bosses and I like the music and sound effects, especially the sound effect when you get an extra life. So I give Kung Fu on the Nintendo an 8 out of 10. The only thing I don’t like about Kung Fu is you get one extra life in the entire game. Even if you get a score of 100,000 you still won’t be rewarded with an extra life, which is not easy to reach. However, if you have a Nintendo or a console that can play NES cartridges, you should check out this game.
